Welcome to Hardship & Hope, a website to curate excellent journalism focused on Aotearoa
New Zealand’s crisis of inequality, and community action to lean against the harms of poverty.
Extreme wealth disparity destroys empathy and cohesion, as those who have plenty lose
connection and shared experience with those who don’t have enough for a decent life. This
website will host writing that helps build awareness of the issues, promotes informed
debate, and encourages a shared understanding that, in the end, everyone loses in a society
where some are oppressed by poverty and deprivation.
First up, the site launches with Hardship & Hope, an indepth series of articles by multi
award-winning freelance journalist and author Rebecca Macfie. The series was published in
the Listener through the winter of 2023. Rebecca’s journalism was supported by research
and travel funding from philanthropists Scott and Mary Gilmour.
